I have always intended for a vaginal birth without the use of medication or painkillers. As a first time mum to be, I do not have prior experience in the labour ward and most of what I have are imagination pieced together by friends’ sharing and online readings. I was pretty nervous when I was in the third trimester. So many unpredictable things can happen at labour! One thing I know with certain… my oils can support me in unlocking milestones, just as they had always done.
These are some useful recipes which you can use from your third trimester all the way to the birth of the baby 🙂
PREPARATION FOR FIRST TIME MUM
Perineum Massage Oil
*To soften to the area so as to reduce perineal trauma at birth
Apply on perineal and to be used for perineum massage
- V6 Complex – 1 oz / 30ml
- Geranium – 8 drops
- Lavender – 5 drops
- At week 37, add Fennel – 5 drops into the mixture
LABOUR & BIRTH
Brief your husband or birth partner what you want them to do while in the labour ward. When the contractions are strong and regular, you won’t be able to give clear instructions!
Bring along: Ultrasonic Diffuser & Portable Speakers
Choose your favourite oil to diffuse! For me, I’ve chosen Joy Essential Oil.
Music helps to relax the body when it is in labour. Bring your own music device loaded with your preferred playlist and speakers.
Hub had been briefed to set up the diffuser and the music while I focus on the birth process.
Stages of labour and birth with the support of Essential Oils
To speed up or to promote contractions, Clary Sage is the oil that came highly recommended. But it did nothing for me! That’s what I love about the oils… We are not working with medicines, and everyone of us responds to the plants differently.
Something I haven’t tried but this recipe came in various literature:
Premix this blend when packing for your hospital bag.
Apply this blend only after labour had started.
- 5 drops Ylang Ylang
- 4 drops Helichrysum
- 2 drops Fennel
- 2 drops Peppermint
- 2 drops Clary Sage
I’ve used the following Pain Management blend and this is one I would strongly recommend for you to use to help you cope with the intensity of the contractions.
Pain Management Blend
Premix this blend in an empty glass bottle with pump.
- 20 drops Frankincense
- 20 drops Idaho Balsam Fir
- 20 drops Copaiba
- Top up the bottle with V6 complex
